ROOTED 2024
Buried & unearthed canvas, thread, cotton fiber, cotton twill tape, ink transfer.
“Rooted” project compares the embedded information of the unseen soil microbes with the idea of memory – specifically connotations of homeland and the uprootedness of the immigrant experience.
To determine the microbial profile of the desert soil, I folded and buried cotton cloths near the roots of a Palo Verde tree in my back yard for two-months in the Spring of 2023. I used the resulting unearthed cloth, embroidered and shaped into a pair of slip-on shoes, to interpret the idea of a “second skin” and explore the memory of place.
