FLUTTERING HEARTS  2014

Installation commissioned by Glendale Public Art Program for downtown Glenadle's Murphy Park. Glendale, Arizona. Red felt, wire.

This piece featured 4,000 heart-shaped butterflies made of red felt and wire clustered around the historic trees along the park. Using the iconic images of the butterfly and the heart to create a new hybrid heart-butterfly species. "Fluttering Hearts" playfully references the human biological and physiological response associated with romantic love. Migration and mobility are other underlying themes to this work particularly as they relate to human migratory patterns in Arizona, and are metaphorically represented in this installation.

In addition to experiencing the project in person, and through a series of open workshops, visitors were invited to participate in making their own fluttering hearts to add to the installation.
